One of two returning players, Briana McKinney (#14) goes for a lay up against the Trojans.

February has been a good month for the seventh-ranked Lady Stormers basketball squad. The team followed up their 88-74 victory over Rock Valley College on Wednesday, Feb. 4 with back-to-back incinerations of Triton College on Saturday, Feb. 7 and Wilbur Wright College on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
The contest against Triton College was a complete dismantling of the opponent’s ability to make any positive advancements against MATC’s swarming defense. The Stormers scored 108 points. The Trojans scored 34.
Sophomore guard Shonnice Vaughn dominated on both ends for MATC, scoring 28 points and nabbing five steals. Vaughn was hotter than a $2 pistol from deep range, making five of her six 3-point attempts.
Guard DeAndrea “DeDe” Jones ended up with a double-double, scoring 20 and grabbing 10 rebounds. Jones led the team with six assists and also had four steals.
Triton College was held to a 17.6 field goal percentage, converting only nine of their 51 shots. MATC forced 33 turnovers.
The game against Wilbur Wright College was a lot like the game before it. MATC scored 101 points. Their opponent scored 35.
It was Trisha Patton who did the heavy lifting against Wilbur Wright. Patton accumulated 32 points, 18 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Jones was again effective, adding 20 points and 11 rebounds. Vaughn brought her unique blend of intensity and disruption as well, swiping six steals with 14 points and 11 rebounds to go with them.
Wilbur Wright turned the ball over 43 times and were outrebounded 68-27. Tayja Dean scored 14 points for the Rams.
The victories brought MATC’s winning streak to an impressive nine games and improved their overall win total to 20. MATC is 10-2 in N4C conference play this season.
