Energy assistance for heating is available

Dear Student Legal Clinic,I live in an older duplex with my three kids. Last year, the old furnace had some problems and my landlord finally got it fixed. I am afraid it is going to go out again. I am on a budget plan with WE Energies because my gas bill is so high.

My landlord can’t afford a new furnace. I know because he is my uncle and only gets Social Security. Can we get help?

    Signed, Kerenna

    Dear Kerenna,

You should immediately get in touch with the Energy Assistance Program. It is possible that they can help with furnace repairs or even a new furnace if your landlord is low-income. It is also possible that you could get weatherization services to help you cut that gas bill.

You can also apply for Energy Assistance at that time. You said you had three children, so your income must be under $2,650.00 per month. You must bring proof of income sources for all household members 18 years and older for the past three months. You must have Social Security cards for everyone in the household. You must bring your current energy bill or a statement from the landlord confirming that heat is included in the rent.

To find the closest location and the times to apply for Energy Assistance, call 414-906-2800.

Or you can visit the website at www.cr-sdc.org/Programs/EnergyAssistance.html

You can also pick up a flyer from one of the Student Legal Clinic tables or in the office in Room M326.

For more information and referrals, please call 414-297-6630.
