DO use social networking sites to consider educational topics and school projects. Group work can be done on Facebook by creating a private group and using it to communicate and post relevant information about the course or project.

DO read “I accept” policies thoroughly before clicking. Technology and social media policies are different for just about every school. Some sites may share your email address with other companies, which may lead to an increase in spam.

DO use social media to research career options and companies and to stay connected with past employers for future recommendations and references.

DO keep peace of mind knowing that law enforcement officials use social networking sites to catch and prosecute criminals.

DO use social media to make connections with people with similar interests and goals, make new friends and improve current relationships by staying in touch with those you are unable to see regularly.

DON’T post confidential information, including anything with your Social Security number, driver’s license number and birthday.

DON’T post illegal activities. This may lead to you being dismissed from school and facing criminal prosecution.

DON’T post unprofessional and distasteful photographs and comments. Potential employers often check a candidate’s social networking profiles before making an offer.

DON’T trust privacy settings 100%. When you put something online regardless of how private you think it is, it is out there!

DON’T write emotionally charged posts. Pause and think about how your post will affect the feelings, safety and well-being of others.
