Legal Clinic

Free Legal assistance for low-income residents

Dear Student Legal Clinic,

I have had several legal issues over the last year.  What kind of help can I receive from the Legal Aid Society?

Signed Kiki

Dear Kiki,

The Civil Division of the Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee provides free legal assistance to low-income residents of Milwaukee County.  These areas include bankruptcy, civil rights, consumer problems, disability claims for both Social Security and SSI, elder law, eviction, foreclosure, housing code violations, identity theft, Municipal Court matters, repossession of household goods, small claims cases, tax controversies with the IRS, unemployment compensation claims, and wage garnishment.

In addition, the Civil Division has seven targeted programs that focus on Milwaukee’s underserved poverty community.

To receive services from the Legal Aid Society, you can visit their walk- in clinic every Monday and Wednesday afternoon from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at its downtown location.  That office is at 521 N. 8th Street, and their phone is 414-727-5300.  You can also visit their website at www.lasmilwaukee.com.

For more information and referrals, visit the Student Legal Clinic in Room M326, email [email protected], or call 414-297-6630.
