Music, Animation and TV and Video students get connected

Earlier this month, the Animation students set aside their coursework to prepare for this year’s Student Operations day. Every year, the Television and Video Production students take over Milwaukee Public Television (MPTV) Channel 36.1. The day includes a series of programs produced, directed and edited by all the students currently enrolled in the program.

The theme for this year is “Connections.” This year, TVP student L.C. Satterfield has asked the Animation department for contributions to this year’s Ops day.

Teachers Brian Mennenoh and Tim Decker set aside a whole week, March 8 through 12, for their students to work on minute-long animations. “We basically set aside course work for the week to work on Students Ops projects,” said Mennenoh. “We told them to produce anything that symbolizes “Connections” and roll with it and go any direction.”

With this task in mind, the students were able to work from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday to create the projects.

Once the animations were complete, they were handed off to the VICOM sound editing class to recreate the audio and add sound effects. They were also given to the music department where tracks created by the students were laid down, and then will be received by Satterfield for final editing by April 16.

At least 50 Animation students took part in the week, including both first- and second-year students. Some animations are 2D, featuring projects that include magnetic legs connecting to each other and a woman who goes through the process of connecting to herself.

3D projects include arcade machines turning into robots, a Rube Goldberg machine and adorable kitties.

Student Ops day this year will be on May 8, so mark your calendars and tune your channels to 36.1.
