IT Security students defend against hackers

On Tuesday, January 31, MATC Mequon Campus IT Security program students Matt Lange, Jeff Stone, Katie Becker and Todd Scott participated in the Wisconsin Technical College Showcase at the capitol in Madison, WI.

Teacher advisors Dr. Moshen Doroodchi and Rafat Elshref accompanied the students. They were joined by sixteen other technical colleges from around the state.

The IT Security Club displayed a presentation about their Colligate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC) from February 24.

A competition devote to expanding the students understanding of how to defend against professional penetration testers (or hackers) on a controlled network. The Downtown Campus also had a display regarding improving the graduation rates at MATC.

Other presentations included Nanoscience Research of Porous Silicon, Going Green, Going Delicious: Sustainability Garden and Marketing Research among many others.

“The projects demonstrated how our students routinely combine traditional learning with entrepreneurship opportunities, outreach, and community service,” said Dan Clancy, president of the Wisconsin Technical College System.

February 24, the MATC CCDC team won the local competition and will be moving on to the Regionals. There they will compete against teams from Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
