Current student, Greer, releases poetry book; second on the way

Rachel Greer, a current MATC student, is an already accomplished author, at the age of 19. Her poetry book, “Words of Inspiration from Your Own Kind,” was released in May 2011.

Greer’s greatest literary inspiration growing up was Maya Angelou. Angelou and her poem, “Phenomenal Woman,” had a tremendous impact on Greer; by the age of 13, Greer was involved in writing. As Greer explained, both Angelou and the poem “did a lot for me as a young African American, the confidence she possessed was undeniable and I aspire to be the same exact way.”

Greer’s approach to writing is to “STOP, DROP, and WRITE,” explaining her process of when inspiration strikes, she must stop everything and write her ideas down, no matter what.

To help promote her book, Greer took part in a virtual book tour from November 2011 until the end of February 2012.

Her book, “Words of Inspiration from Your Own Kind,” took two years to write, while her upcoming second book, “Over The Edge,” took about 11 months. The upcoming book is part one of a planned three part series about love. Greer is also planning to experiment with recording poetry to musical instruments.

Besides writing, Greer hopes to graduate with a business management degree and work in the insurance field.

Greer also has some advice for aspiring writers, “If you believe in you, others will too.”
