Low or no cost resources for students

School is back in session and along with it comes the various low or no cost resources that are available to both new and returning students.

The first resource available is the Open Gym, which is an open period in rooms M5 and M27 in the Downtown Milwaukee Campus’ Main Building. This is where students can work out as well as make up for any physical education classes that were missed, according to Physical Education Instruction Chair Patricia O’Connor.

To participate in the Open Gym, students must have a current Stormers Pass (student ID) available, as well as wear appropriate athletic attire and shoes. Midriff baring tops are not allowed. Backpacks, gym bags and purses are also not allowed. Food or beverages, with the exception of water in a tightly sealed plastic water bottle, are also prohibited within the gym.

Also, there aren’t any spectators allowed in the gymnasium, fitness lab or weight room, as participants who are dressed appropriately for the gym will be admitted in.

If a student is looking to play basketball, games are only allowed up to eleven points and students on one court are not allowed to play the winners on a different court.

Those looking for assistance on or about the exercise machines can go to one of the two instructors that are available to assist with that or to assist a student with their make-up physical education homework.

After students are done with their exercises, they can change their clothes in the Women’s and Men’s locker rooms. Although lockers are provided in the locker rooms, students are responsible for bringing their own locks and making sure the locks are not left on a locker overnight as they will be removed. The open gym is now open until December 20, and a student can work out from noon to 12:55 p.m. every Monday through Thursday, a schedule that O’Connor had mentioned was scaled back due to the recent budget cuts from the school.

New students can also access other low or no cost resources such as the libraries, which are available at all four MATC campuses. They offer free services for the availability to check out class related materials such as books and media items, as well as allow the student free computer access and the ability to pay for printing and copies with the free print funds already stored on their Stormers Pass.

Another great resource is the Barber and Cosmetology Department, which offers free haircuts and low cost manicures and pedicures throughout the semester.

Client Services for the hairdressing students have begun in Room M126 (on the first floor of the main building of the Milwaukee campus.)

Services that are available include haircuts, shampoo and blow dry styling, roller sets, perms and chemical relaxers, as well as linings and beard trims, hair coloring and shampoo scalp treatments, all less than $50.

Client Services is available every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on Friday from 7:50 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., which started on September 1 and will end October 20. Students looking for a way to de-stress can go to Room M110 to enjoy a mini-facial, 5-minute neck massage or a paraffin hand dip, all under $10, at the Mini-Spa Services. The Mini-Spa is available on Mondays from 12:40 to 3:00 p.m. Appointments should be made for both client services and the mini-spa.

To get in contact with Client Services or Mini-Spa and set up an appointment, call 414-297-6819.

For students that need some assistance on their homework can go to the Tutoring Services room in C201 every Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There is also a homework help line that is available for Accounting and Math students. They are open from Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 p.m. to 1 p.m. The help line is then open from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. They can be reached at 414-297-8376.

If a student can’t contact the homework help or tutors and have access to the internet, the online tutors for any subject is available Monday through Friday. The Online Writing Lab can assist with any writing assignments a student may have. It can be found at http://matc.edu/student/resources/owl/owl.html.
