Stormers lose big and small

The Stormers played host to a doubleheader against the Prairie State Pioneers on Thursday, April 26 but lost in two games that could not have been more different.

Game one was about as ugly as they get. The Pioneers scored six runs each in the second and fifth innings, whereas the Stormers were only able to muster one run off a double by outfielder Bobby Widenski in the bottom of the fifth. The game lasted only five innings due to the "mercy rule" - where a game is ended if a team is ahead by 10 or more runs after four or more innings. The final score was 12-1.

Like night and day, game two was a completely different affair. The Pioneers continued their scoring ways, scoring one in the first inning off a sacrifice fly by Joe Czarnecki. But the Stormers answered quickly scoring three runs in the bottom half of the first, one in the second off Tony Urbaniak's base hit and two more in the third off a single by catcher Mike Monfre.

Up by a score of 6-4 and three outs from securing the victory, the Stormers gave up three base hits, allowing Prairie State to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. In extra innings, Prairie State went ahead 7-6 in the top of the ninth on outfielder Jim Topps' sacrifice fly. The Stormers looked likely to tie or win the game in the bottom half of the frame, quickly loading up the bases with only one out; infielder Mason Filz lead off with a walk, Urbaniak was hit by a pitch, Devon Hornowski reached on a fielder's choice, and Brandon Helt reached on an error. However, Pioneers pitcher John Rafferty regained his confidence and struck out the final two batters to end the game.

Notably, the previous day against Elgin Community College, the Stormers managed to turn a triple play in the tenth inning on their way to a 13 inning, 7-6 victory.

The Stormers compiled a season record of 22-23. As of press time, the Stormers began the postseason May 5, going 1-1 against Harper College.
