Just one way to get back in school

Rose Massey operates the Just One Program at the MATC Downtown campus. It is a program designed to provide an avenue for students who are on academic suspension to return to their courses. If you know of such a student, then you can tell them that they are eligible. What can they look forward to once they are enrolled through Just One? They will have to gear up for their eight-week book camp.

That’s where re-entering students can update their math and reading skills. And that’s not all. The program has just one more advantage to meet the need. Just One is able to accommodate this need by attaching rebound seekers to a mentor and whatever the student’s division, such as nursing, the program finds them a mentoring partner.

Massey states, “One of the advantages to Just One is having a mentoring component, but it also has an academic component to help the students.” Once they’ve successfully completed the program the suspension can be lifted. After completing the satisfactory goal, then the student is now qualified to return to the college in their area of study, or perhaps even a new major.

When asked about what Just One students think of the program, Massey says, “One of the things that students say to me all of the time is that they wish they would’ve had the program when they came through the door, before probation and suspension.”

According to Massey, there are close to 2,000 students per semester who are placed on academic suspension. Although Just One is just one of the avenues that pupils can use to return to MATC, this semester’s turnout is around 81. These are the 81 who will be able to come back after November 10, 2011, when this semester’s Just One program ends. Most of all, Massey feels that “It’s good to have avenues by which students can return to the college.”
