There is an interesting mix of sound and color when one enters the Nailtech lab located on the first floor of the Main Building, Downtown Milwaukee Campus. Judy Brown operates as instructor in lab room M108, teaching her group to properly buff, shape and sculpt exquisite nails.
The NT students can perform manicures and pedicures for $5. They also are skilled to do acrylic gel and fabric tips and overlays at $12.
An overlay for the natural nail is $10 and the fills for the two-week maintenance starts at $5. The NT lab prefers appointments, but will take walk-ins.
The season is open this fall, from the end of October to December. If you can't make it down, the client Nailtech program restarts in January, so the client services reopens in March.
They close in May. There are no services in the summer.
"Please come down and patronize our students. They need plenty of practice for preparation for their state board exam," said Judy Brown. "We're open to the general public afternoons 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m, and on Friday 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m."
Once clients have had their nails done, they can head up to the 6th floor Bakery lab, where students are constantly cooking things up.
One can find cookies, breads, dinner rolls and doughnuts for an average of a buck, depending on the goods. They also accompany treats with fresh coffee for sale, and white and chocolate milk, too.
Another great deal is always the specialty cakes that the students can make with a half down deposit of the total cost of the cake ordered.
Hours are Monday 1 p.m.- 3 p.m., Tuesday 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Wednesday 8:30 a.m.-11 p.m. and Thursday 8:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.
Clients can also go to the Barber Cosmetology department, where they offer haircuts, shampoos and chemical services. Please call 414-297-7854 for prices, availability and hours.
After focusing on their beauty, clients can take time out to address their health issues by visiting the Echocardiography (EKG) clinic.
The EKG uses sound waves to take a look at your heart for free. The one-hour scan is available this fall semester and is done on Wednesdays and in the spring semester on Tuesdays in Room M480, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The screenings are open to students, faculty, administration and staff. Call 414-297-6441 to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome, time permitting.
Finally, clients can take advantage and get their teeth cleaned and x-rayed at the Dental lab. If students are interested, they can make an appointment on Mondays 8 a.m.-7 p.m., Tuesday 1 p.m-5 p.m., Wednesday 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Thursdays 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Fridays noon-4 p.m.
On the first visit a screening and x-ray is done, then on the second visit clients can get a cleaning. Only cleanings, x-rays and screenings are offered, no actual dental repairs. The fall season is clinical from now to December.
