High teen pregnancy rates hurt families, community

Milwaukee has the seventh highest teen pregnancy rate in the U.S. and continues to fluctuate in the top ten from year to year. It is gaining more awareness and community healthcare efforts, yet persists to be a prevalent problem. Statistics show that teen pregnancy is not only a burden to the parents, but to society as a whole. (0) comments

The award-winning Phoenix magazine has just been released and will be available in the MATC bookstores on Thursday, May 15. Copies are a steal at $4.00. Prepare to be entertained by stories, poems, essays, art , and photography produced by our own MATC students, faculty, and staff. (0) comments

An historical moment passed on April 28th when MATC formally began a new partnership with three more historically black colleges, making a total of nine HBCU transfer opportunities for students. MATC now has in place transfer opportunities with North Carolina A&T (Greensboro, NC), Talladega College (Talladega, Alabama), and Jackson State University (Jackson, Mississippi). (0) comments

Solar panels, turbine to be constructed at Oak Creek and Mequon

Plans have moved off of the drawing board and into the ground for construction of a wind turbine at Mequon Campus. After plans were put on the back burner due to change of administration and permit difficulties, the turbine is finally set to be constructed approximately 30 yards off of the southwest corner of the campus building. There are currently 47 million people in the United States without health care coverage. The rising cost of healthcare erodes benefit packages that usually are provided by employers. In fact, health insurance expenses are the fastest growing cost component for employers. (0) comments

What's the point of 25 feet?

Smokers and those using chewing tobacco MUST stand 25 feet away from all entrances. There are new signs on each of the doors, stencils on the pavement and smokers' poles, located away from the building. The smokers' poles, also referred to as receptacles, should be used for the disposal of cigarettes as well as other smoker materials. (0) comments

MATC's student senate recently finalized details surrounding UPASS, a transit program initiated for college students ensuring easy and affordable access to college and university campuses. Students taking more than six college credits will be charged $65 per semester for an all-access UPASS card which includes unlimited access to county bus service, anytime of the day or night. Earth Day weekend proved to be a success when MATC Mequon Campus partnered with the Ozaukee County Health Department to collect over 500 pounds of medications in a truly successful medicine drive. Residents were encouraged to dispose of any old prescriptions and expired medications as long as they were in the form of pills, ointments, sprays, inhalers, creams or vials. (0) comments

MATC's four childcare centers would like to thank everybody who contributed to their annual food drive held. The event is held every April during the Week of the Young Child. This year the childcare centers collected 1801.40 pounds of food. The food was delivered to five area food pantries, who admit that they "are struggling to meet the needs of people in their area.
