Lutheran Social Services' Communications Team is growing! We are currently seeking a Communications Intern to join our team. The Communications Intern will assist the team to develop social media strategies and provide marketing, PR and media support that aligns with the organization's strategic goals. In this role, the communications intern will have the opportunity to assist with creative brainstorming, content development/editing and graphic layout for print and digital applications; media relations; and internal and external events throughout Wisconsin for colleagues, donors, prospective employees and more.

The opportunity is Monday through Friday with flexible hours between 8 AM - 5 PM, approximately 15 to 20 hours per week. Possibility of working remotely once trained.

Essential Duties and responsibilities:

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.

* Social Media: Co-create and execute a results-driven social media strategy and calendar for the remainder of 2021 as well as the LSS 140 Anniversary in 2022. Assist in creating engaging text, image and video content across multiple channels.
* Attend events, produce live social media content and assist with archiving the plans and outcomes for future use.
* Maintain unified brand voice across different social media channels.
* Review analytics and create reports on key metrics.
* Monitor online conversations with LSS publics and respond to queries or questions from clients as directed by LSS Communications Coordinator.
* Public Relations: Assist PR Specialist with a variety of tasks related to building Public Relations infrastructure at LSS.
* Research, document and maintain media contacts list.
* Coordinate rollout of spokesperson, crisis communications and other internal training.
* Request media kits and other information from media sources.
* Interview colleagues on possible media stories.
* Marketing
* Assist with development of graphic layout and design for templated materials. Update materials as needed for business units
* Manage marketing requests in Smartsheet made through an online communications form
* Create stock photography library
* Lead development of an organization-wide style guide
* Other tasks as assigned.

This is a Bachelor's level internship opportunity. Qualified candidates must have a minimum of junior status or higher and be actively enrolled in a Communications or related field coursework at an accredited university or have related work experience.

In addition the following is required:

* Up to 3 years' experience with social media marketing, content development and Desktop publishing.
* Experience using social media management tools (e.g., Sprout Social)
* Experience with Microsoft Office
* Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (e.g., Photoshop, InDesign) or equivalent digital media editing tools and Wordpress a plus
* Passion for communications/PR with social media proficiency on major social media platforms using social media management tools
* Some experience with video and photo editing tools, digital media formats, and HTML


Must have excellent communication skills, demonstrate creativity, be detail-oriented, be comfortable working on deadlines and operate and dress professionally. Must be comfortable asking questions, interviewing, requesting information, being proactive and learning by doing.

* Strong copywriting and copy editing skills
* Impeccable time management skills with the ability to multitask
* Detail-oriented approach with ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines


The incumbent of this position must have a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation to perform the essential duties of the role.


Employee must be able to read and understand English and US Dollar currency. Ability to communicate both in verbal and written format, effectively and efficiently in job.


Working knowledge of computers to allow employee to access computer systems and applications to complete timecards, read and respond to email, and complete required on-line training. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Suite including Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, and Visio.

The incumbent of this position works in a hybrid work environment, including an air-conditioned, office environment and remote setting. The incumbent will also be exposed to outdoor weather conditions if traveling on company business. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

TRAVEL: Daily and overnight travel would be seldom.
