Safety & Risk Management Internship

Internship Program Overview:

Students participate in the intern program at Northwestern Mutual. Program objectives provide the student with hands-on experience through teamwork and collaboration, as well as individual work assignments. Interns participate in a wide range of learning and development activities including job shadows, attending various speaking engagements and events designed to expose interns to multiple areas of the firm. Interns also have an opportunity to network with senior leaders across the firm, attend various social and work-sponsored events and are also encouraged to engage in team volunteer opportunities within the community.

Who We Are:

The Campus & Event Experiences (CEE) Risk Management organization is responsible for Northwestern Mutual's enterprise security, safety, and business continuity programs. We help to ensure a safe and secure environment and that we are prepared to respond to an incident and minimize its impact. We are trusted advisors in assisting the enterprise in making risk aware business decisions to mitigate security, safety, and business continuity risks.

Role and Responsibilities:

The CEE Risk Management intern would assist the team in the execution of day-to-day operational activities as well as activities to evolve our security, safety, and business continuity programs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct periodic inspections of security, safety, and business continuity related devices
  • Assist in the capturing and reporting of risk metrics
  • Assist in the development and implementation of business process-improvement initiatives
  • Document risk management procedures
  • Refine risk management resources for the workforce


  • Sophomore or Junior pursuing a Bachelor's in Safety, Criminal Justice, Building/Facility Operations, Risk Management, or related field
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA

Required Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organization and time management skills and ability to multi-task
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Intermediate level proficiency using MS Excel and Word

Desired Skills:

  • Intermediate level of proficiency using SharePoint

*This Internship is held at our Corporate Office in Milwaukee, WI. It starts Summer 2020 with the potential to continue interning onsite part-time during the school year.
